Classic ClawFoot Tub Which is better and why - Clawfoot tub and shower versus traditional tub and shower combo?
We are remodeling our bathroom in our 100 year old row house. I really like the classic style of a clawfoot tub or pedestal tub, but since it is our only full bathroom, we must also have a shower in combination with our tub. I'd like to hear from others the pros and cons of having a clawfoot or pedestal tub and shower combo - with the shower curtain all the way around. It will be against a wall, but obviously won't be like having a closed in & tiled tub.
We have two children, so I'm curious about the depth of the tub in terms of getting in and out of the tub. Also, I'm interested in hearing about the feeling of safety while showering in a tub without one side walled in.
Thank you for your help!
I know how temping the look of a claw foot tub is. It looks so cool, especially in an older house.
Claw foot tubs are beautiful and a good selling point if you ever decide to sell your house. They also fit the decor of an older house very well.
However, they are hard to clean inside because of their size and on the floor because the space underneath them is hard to get to. They are also a bit of a safety hazard for small children if the child tries to climb out of the typically high sided tub. They are also expensive on you water bill.
For small children, a tub that is tiled and against the wall is a better fit. It is safer, easier to clean and uses less water for bathing.
Perhaps when the children get older or move out of the house, you could redo the bathroom in the more traditional style of the house with a claw foot tub.
Commonly when we think of clawfoot tubs we are carried to the age of Jane Austen. When ladies wore elegant dresses each day of the week and didn't do anything but read poetry, play music, and sew and men spent all their time hunting and debating over politics. The years when there was no electricity and running water.
I think it is safe to say that we are grateful to be able to have plumbing pipes heat and bring us the water we need - but why not do it in elegance like the old days? These bathtubs are much more exquisite and classic in appearance then the common bath that is found in homes. Though they are more expensive they are well worth the cost.
But no clawfoot tub would be complete without the required fixtures to ensure that it is working right. Without these the tub will not be able to work the right way and will misplace much of its attraction. These fixtures serve to grant it an elegant look and make it simpler to use then your average bathtub.
There are a variety of faucets that you have the ability to use get and they are provided in different sizes and designs. One of the more popular is the extended faucet that is long and drapes smoothly over one side of the tub. This helps to give it a rather elegant appearance to and is often in copper.
Another popular clawfoot bathtub fixture that is used is the hand shower. This piece is very handy to utilize when the bath stands alone. It is linked to a long chord that lets you to get hold of and wash off your back. It is also very graceful and sets in a special stoop on the top of the bath.

Claw Foot Tub Do you know any one that refinishes an old claw foot tub?
I'm looking for a company to re-coat my late grandmothers claw tub. I am having a hard time finding someone that has the capability of doing this. I do not wish to see it sanded and have a coat of paint spayed on it.My wife and I are looking for someone to totally strip the tub down to the cast and re-coat the tub with the original material that it currently has on it. I know to do this the tub must be heat treatd so a kiln will be needed.
I know it can be done.
Restored woodwork from an old bathroom & the owners were in the process of having the old clawfoot tub & pedestal sink crated.
It was being shipped somewhere in NY state (if Irecall correctly ) to be refurbed w/ new "real" porcelain.
This is going back some time , but it might have been in the 3 to 4K range & not sure if that included handling.
Vintage tubs & such are in demand for historical renovations , so you might search under porcelain restoration.
Sounds nice
Best regards
Is it a good idea to put a claw foot tub in a bathroom?
I'm worried that it wouldn't be a good idea for resale value. I want to put up beadboard on the lower half of the wall and put in a pedestal sink. Very old classic look but worried that when I sell noone will have the same taste as me and see it as a way to lower their offers.
Also, if I do it to one bathroom, should I do it to the other bathroom to keep the flow of the house the same?
You had a key phrase in your question "Very old CLASSIC look" that's exactly it. It's a classic look. Go ahead and put it in, it won't scare any potential buyer down the road.
