Classic ClawFoot Tub
Which is better and why - Clawfoot tub and shower versus traditional tub and shower combo?
We are remodeling our bathroom in our 100 year old row house. I really like the classic style of a clawfoot tub or pedestal tub, but since it is our only full bathroom, we must also have a shower in combination with our tub. I'd like to hear from others the pros and cons of having a clawfoot or pedestal tub and shower combo - with the shower curtain all the way around. It will be against a wall, but obviously won't be like having a closed in & tiled tub.
We have two children, so I'm curious about the depth of the tub in terms of getting in and out of the tub. Also, I'm interested in hearing about the feeling of safety while showering in a tub without one side walled in.

I know how temping the look of a claw foot tub is. It looks so cool, especially in an older house.
Claw foot tubs are beautiful and a good selling point if you ever decide to sell your house. They also fit the decor of an older house very well.
However, they are hard to clean inside because of their size and on the floor because the space underneath them is hard to get to. They are also a bit of a safety hazard for small children if the child tries to climb out of the typically high sided tub. They are also expensive on you water bill.
For small children, a tub that is tiled and against the wall is a better fit. It is safer, easier to clean and uses less water for bathing.
Perhaps when the children get older or move out of the house, you could redo the bathroom in the more traditional style of the house with a claw foot tub.

Commonly when we think of clawfoot tubs we are carried to the age of Jane Austen.
