Another Chemistry issue?
A 500-mL beaker and a 1.0-L beaker are both completely filled with water. A brass cube, 2.0 cm on edge, is gently placed on the water in the 1.0-L beaker and a rectangular block of cork, 5.0cm X 4.0cm X 2.0 cm on the water in the 500-mL beaker. The density of brass is 8.40 g/cm^3 , and that of cork is 0.22 g/cm^3. From which vessel will the greater volume of water overflow? Explain.
The answer is cork, but I don't understand why. The brass would have a mass of something like 67g and it would sink, therefore displacing 67 mL of water right? Whereas the cork's mass comes out to a measly 8.8g, and it floats, therefore only displacing 8.8 mL of water right?? So I don't understand how the floating 8.8g of cork could possibly overflow more water than a submerged 67g block of brass.
The brass cube will sink, displacing its VOLUME of water, not its MASS of water... so that's only 8 mL of water (8 cm^3) that spills out of the beaker.
The cork floats, and therefore it displaces its own MASS of water - 8.8 mL, as you said.
(Why the difference? A floating body displaces its own mass of water, but a totally submerged one displaces its own volume. Think about this - a gold cube would weigh even more than the brass one, but if they occupy the same volume, then the gold cube still displaces only the same volume of water as the brass one. A piece of wood (5x4x2 cm) with a density of 0.5 g/cm^3, though, would float lower in the water than the cork, so it would displace more water.)
